{"id":3001,"date":"2025-05-13T21:01:36","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T21:01:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/collections-information\/?p=3001"},"modified":"2025-05-13T21:09:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T21:09:05","slug":"eric-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/collections-information\/2025\/05\/13\/eric-update\/","title":{"rendered":"ERIC update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Tl;dr: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ERIC continues to operate, but is indexing fewer journals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The contents of ERIC are reported to be stable with no plans to delete records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If\/when potential alternatives to ERIC emerge, we would assess these in collaboration with TAL (because ERIC is in the TAL Core set of subscriptions)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As we&#8217;re all aware, lately there&#8217;s been a lot of worrying news about widespread defunding and dismantling of American research and knowledge infrastructures. In CSU, we&#8217;re working to stay informed and to understand the impacts on our collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One resource that&#8217;s been under a cloud of uncertainty is core Education database <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.ualberta.ca\/az\/eric-via-ebscohost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ERIC<\/a>. The US Department of Education&#8217;s research arm, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ies.ed.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Education Sciences<\/a>, runs and maintains ERIC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late April 2025, it was announced that ERIC would continue to operate, albeit on a smaller scale. The acting head of the Institute of Education Sciences, Matthew Soldner, has <a href=\"https:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/proof-points-restart-eric-ed-library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated that<\/a> \u201cno content has been removed or deleted from ERIC,&#8221; and that the database&#8217;s \u201cpreservation policy is unchanged: we will not remove an article in ERIC unless it is retracted by the publisher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, we do not have a complete sense of how ERIC&#8217;s reduced capacity will affect its coverage. There&#8217;s a collaborative <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1H5qSJQE2N-wh6FxnWxBHE9r5Oq9mW-kI5Q_LDf4pKs4\/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.amc5r0s78jxx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of journals no longer covered by ERIC<\/a>, but this is an incomplete list, based on reports from individual journal editors. It has been <a href=\"https:\/\/news.illinoisstate.edu\/2025\/04\/new-guidance-on-eric-database-availability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported elsewhere<\/a> that ERIC&#8217;s indexing will shrink from 1,200 to 700 titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vendors such as EBSCO are working on ERIC alternatives, but nothing has been announced or offered yet. Because ERIC is so widely important, it&#8217;s part of The Alberta Library&#8217;s TAL Core set of subscriptions.
