Wonders Map Collection adds 3000th map to Internet Archive."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On October 6, 2025, William C. Wonders Map Collection staff uploaded our 3000<sup>th<\/sup> map to Internet Archive (<strong>IA<\/strong>). The 1912 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/WCWdb_34702\">plan showing survey of Old Trail being part of Old Trail from Saddle Lake to Lac la Biche<\/a><\/em>, in classic ozalid, and a 20 footer<sup data-fn=\"23354123-39f2-497c-ba71-ccfaff70bd3d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#23354123-39f2-497c-ba71-ccfaff70bd3d\" id=\"23354123-39f2-497c-ba71-ccfaff70bd3d-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> covering a distance over 100 kilometers. It has now become the longest map we have scanned.<sup data-fn=\"230568df-4c93-4a1e-9901-13ae07f7f7c1\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#230568df-4c93-4a1e-9901-13ae07f7f7c1\" id=\"230568df-4c93-4a1e-9901-13ae07f7f7c1-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2021 the collection of maps on IA has been growing. Relying on intermittent Digitization staff and student hours, SLIS and MacEwan practicums, and the initial core work of the Metadata Strategies team in creating a spreadsheet that aligns the map collection <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.library.ualberta.ca\/index.php\">database<\/a><sup data-fn=\"dde485ea-fa06-4e12-98e7-4cd5d2817676\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#dde485ea-fa06-4e12-98e7-4cd5d2817676\" id=\"dde485ea-fa06-4e12-98e7-4cd5d2817676-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> with IA metadata structures. To all these individuals we owe a great deal of gratitude!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the maps uploaded are a result of reference questions from across North America<sup data-fn=\"8fe3760f-f29b-4eb2-978f-62c112fbc317\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#8fe3760f-f29b-4eb2-978f-62c112fbc317\" id=\"8fe3760f-f29b-4eb2-978f-62c112fbc317-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> with IA providing fast turnarounds for sharing maps. The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/wcw_horvath\">Horvath Collection<\/a> of maps that are part of the J. Eugene Horvath Collection of Hungarica.<sup data-fn=\"62ff5995-de74-4ea0-a0c8-10fde661574d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#62ff5995-de74-4ea0-a0c8-10fde661574d\" id=\"62ff5995-de74-4ea0-a0c8-10fde661574d-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> If you enjoy historical <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/wcw_alberta_roads\">Alberta Highway Maps<\/a>, the collection goes back to the 1920s.<sup data-fn=\"d8d20ac1-5c43-4e8a-aac8-da9ff86a4f92\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#d8d20ac1-5c43-4e8a-aac8-da9ff86a4f92\" id=\"d8d20ac1-5c43-4e8a-aac8-da9ff86a4f92-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> The vibrant <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/DTC\">Chrysant &amp; Leslie Dmytruk and Orest &amp; Olesia Talpash Collection<\/a> of Ukraine &amp; Eastern Europe maps that were donated to Bruce Peel Special Collections have also been added. As these unique maps were processed for IA, map staff researched each individual map item to enhance their descriptions.<sup data-fn=\"6d777d89-285e-4908-bb16-5e019b4557e8\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#6d777d89-285e-4908-bb16-5e019b4557e8\" id=\"6d777d89-285e-4908-bb16-5e019b4557e8-link\">7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/national_parks\">Canada&#8217;s National Parks<\/a> maps that have an associated <em>Indigenous Peoples &amp; Canada&#8217;s National Parks<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.ualberta.ca\/indigenous-peoples-and-canadas-national-parks\">LibGuide<\/a>. This project is part of ongoing work to decolonize the William C. Wonders Map Collection. In this case, through awareness that the Indigenous peoples experience and the creation of Canada\u2019s National Park system was\/is a continuation of settler colonialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curious about our most viewed IA map? Interestingly it is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/WCWdb_20075\"><em>Karta vashneishikh mestorozhdenii polynikh iskopaemikh Aziatskoi Rossi<\/em>i<\/a> a 1924 map of important mineral deposits in the Asian-Russian region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We encourage you to share the collection within your networks, update your LibGuides, and contact us at <a href=\"mailto:data@ualberta.ca\">data@ualberta.ca<\/a> with any questions and\/or suggestions for maps you would like to see added to the William C. Begun as an electronic version of the catalogue records in<a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.ualberta.ca\/permalink\/01UOA_INST\/cgo409\/alma991037544919709116\"> 26 historical handwritten binders<\/a>.  <a href=\"#dde485ea-fa06-4e12-98e7-4cd5d2817676-link\" aria-label=\"Jump to footnote reference 3\">\u21a9\ufe0e<\/a><\/li><li id=\"8fe3760f-f29b-4eb2-978f-62c112fbc317\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/africa-f-50-1896\">Graphic map of Africa<\/a> is an example of reference work. In this case a faculty member from the University of Winnipeg was looking for a map showing the dates and agreements related to Africa&#8217;s colonial boundaries in the late 1800s. We first identified the map in the physical collection. Then scanned and shared via IA within two hours. <a href=\"#8fe3760f-f29b-4eb2-978f-62c112fbc317-link\" aria-label=\"Jump to footnote reference 4\">\u21a9\ufe0e<\/a><\/li><li id=\"62ff5995-de74-4ea0-a0c8-10fde661574d\">These maps are part of the J.
