To learn more about the series, see our module <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/opening-up-copyright-ouc-an-introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OUC: An Introduction<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Opening Up Copyright&#8217;s Goals<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Broadening access to copyright information;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advancing the values associated with openness and open content;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reaching multiple audiences and avoiding duplication in resource development; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Producing open educational resources (OER) about copyright that can serve as an enabler for other open education projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>OUC Instructional Module Characteristics<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The modules have five levels of instruction, from basic to advanced, to meet the needs of a wide variety of learners. The module levels, indicated by colour, are grouped according the these categories:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Level 1: Introduction to the series (red)<\/strong><br>Overview of how the series is structured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 2: Introductory copyright concepts (orange)<\/strong><br>Introduction to key elements of copyright law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 3: Issues (yellow)<\/strong><br>A more in-depth view of some of the elements of copyright law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 4: Scenarios (green)<\/strong><br>A look at some of the problems users might face in navigating specific areas of copyright law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level 5: Legislation and Jurisprudence (blue)<\/strong><br>A closer look at specific sections of the <em>Copyright Act<\/em> and specific legal decisions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The modules are open to instructors and staff across campus, Canada, and around the globe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The modules are openly licensed under a <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/deed.en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CC BY license<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The modules are interactive, featuring popups, links and test questions through use of <a href=\"https:\/\/h5p.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">H5P<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The components that make up the modules include video, transcript, PowerPoint slides, and H5P.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The files needed to reproduce and edit, modify, or adapt the modules are available for download from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualberta.scholaris.ca\/collections\/c94addce-9545-4596-b93d-5abeee8ffdc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Module Materials Collection in ERA<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Release of new modules: The series publicly launched in March 2018 with the first two modules, and new modules continue to be added as they are produced.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Updates to existing modules: Each module is reviewed, and updated as needed, approximately every two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Navigate the Series<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The modules are grouped according to five levels of instruction, however they don\u2019t have to be viewed in any particular order. That being said, starting with general knowledge modules and moving to the more specific is generally a good approach. Here are some examples of how one might approach the series in different contexts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exploring topics of interest<\/strong><br>To learn more about fair dealing \u2013 you might start with the module that introduces the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/applying-fair-dealing\/\">Applying Fair Dealing<\/a> (Scenarios); move on to the <em>Copyright Act<\/em> provision, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/section-29-fair-dealing\/\">Section 29: Fair Dealing<\/a> (Legislation); and continue with the modules on related court cases such as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/cch-v-lsuc\/\">CCH v. LSUC<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/access-copyright-v-york\/\">Access Copyright v. York<\/a><\/em> (Jurisprudence).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Topics relevant to a field of study or occupation<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For Graduate students \u2013 start with <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/including-third-party-content-in-your-work\/\">Including Third-Party Content in Your Work<\/a> (Issues) and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/publishing-agreements\/\">Publishing Agreements<\/a> (Scenarios), as both are relevant to thesis preparation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Art students \u2013 start with <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/images-2\/\">Images<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/moral-rights\/\">Moral Rights<\/a> (Issues) to help you learn about your rights as a creator of copyright-protected works.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For Library users and staff \u2013 start with <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/photocopying-at-the-library\/\">Photocopying in the Library<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/licensed-library-resources\/\">Licensed Library Resources<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/interlibrary-loans-and-controlled-digital-lending\/\">Interlibrary Loan and Controlled Digital Lending<\/a> (Scenarios); move on to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/copyright\/modules\/cch-v-lsuc\/\">CCH v. LSUC<\/a><\/em> (Jurisprudence) which is the case that informed the guidance provided in the Photocopying in the Library module.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Module Update Process<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>A module review and update cycle has been established whereby each module will be reviewed, and updated as required, approximately every two years. These updates will incorporate any changes and create linkages with other modules developed in the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Acknowledgment<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>OUC modules have been produced with the assistance of funding at the University of Alberta through its Centre for Teaching and Learning\u2019s <em>Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund<\/em> (TLEF)(2017-21), with in\u2011kind contributions from the University of Alberta Copyright Office and School of Library and Information Studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional grants funded the production of the following modules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Centre for Teaching and Learning\u2019s <em>OER Grant Program<\/em> (2020)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Collective Licensing Agencies and the Copyright Board<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Educational Institutions\u2019 Policies and Practices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Copyright Act<\/em>, Sections 29.4 \u2013 30.03: Educational Institution Exceptions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alberta (Education) v.
