This photograph frames the rocky summit of Abbot Pass, where a simple cairn now stands in place of the historic 1922 hut that once sheltered climbers. Taken in summer 2024, the image captures the stark mountain landscape and the empty space left by a structure dismantled due to permafrost thaw and glacial retreat. In my research on climate change communication through visual ethnography, this visual serves as a poignant reminder of how warming temperatures are altering both the natural environment and cultural landmarks, underscoring the urgency of documenting and preserving mountain heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How was your image created?<\/em>
I captured this image with an iPhone 16 Pro using the native Camera app in horizontal (landscape) orientation. I selected the 24 mm equivalent wide-angle lens at an f\/1.6 aperture, shooting in Apple ProRAW to maximize dynamic range. The device\u2019s computational HDR algorithm merged multiple exposures in-camera, balancing highlights and shadows without any manual overrides. No third-party apps or post-capture edits were applied\u2014the final JPEG is the straight export from the phone\u2019s ProRAW conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
