The European green crab (Carcinus maenas) is a notorious invader in the coastal waters of British Columbia. Since their arrival in Canada, they have been seen to cause damage to physical habitats, outcompete native species, and threaten food security for coastal nations. They often occur in extremely high densities, with trapping being a common management strategy to remove them from ecosystems. My thesis is in collaboration with Heiltsuk Integrated Resource Management Department, where we are exploring how native predators may be acting as a “biological control” to help control populations of these crabs. If predators such as sea otters, river otters, and mink can help control their populations, trapping can be concentrated in areas where there is less predation occurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
