{"id":8264,"date":"2021-09-20T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/ualbertapressblog\/?p=8264"},"modified":"2021-10-05T08:57:34","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T14:57:34","slug":"prizes-thrilling-news-to-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.library.ualberta.ca\/ualbertapressblog\/2021\/09\/20\/prizes-thrilling-news-to-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Prizes: Thrilling News to Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This has been a wonderful week of award announcements, and we are proud to celebrate recent critical recognition for our authors and their books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hilary Weston Writers\u2019 Trust Prize for Nonfiction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1013-9781772125450-on-foot-to-canterbury\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1013-9781772125450-on-foot-to-canterbury\" target=\"_blank\">On Foot to Canterbury: A Son&#8217;s Pilgrimage<\/a><\/em>, by Ken Haigh, has been shortlisted for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.writerstrust.com\/awards\/hilary-weston-writers-trust-prize-for-nonfiction\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.writerstrust.com\/awards\/hilary-weston-writers-trust-prize-for-nonfiction\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hilary Weston Writers\u2019 Trust Prize for Nonfiction.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jury members had this to say: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>On Foot to Canterbury<\/em> is a beautifully written and eloquent story that skillfully weaves historical anecdotes into a journey through rural England, leaving the reader with practical, sage advice on how to deal with loss and depression, but most of all, on how to live. Haigh\u2019s eye to detail is a delight to read, as are his frequent musings on landscape and history. This subtle, moving story stays with you long after the book is finished.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oral History Association Book Award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oralhistory.org\/annual-awards\/#book\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oralhistory.org\/annual-awards\/#book\" target=\"_blank\">2021 Oral History Association Book Award<\/a> goes to <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/977-9781772124828-our-whole-gwichin-way-of-life-has-changed-gwichin-kyuu-gwiidandai-tthak-ejuk-goonlih\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/977-9781772124828-our-whole-gwichin-way-of-life-has-changed-gwichin-kyuu-gwiidandai-tthak-ejuk-goonlih\" target=\"_blank\">Our Whole Gwich\u2019in Way of Life Has Changed \/ Gwich\u2019in K\u2019yuu Gwiidanda\u0300i\u2019 Tthak Ejuk Go\u0300onlih: Stories from the People of the Land<\/a><\/em>, by<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/news.uaf.edu\/expertsguide\/leslie-mccartney\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/news.uaf.edu\/expertsguide\/leslie-mccartney\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Leslie McCartney<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gwichintribal.ca\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gwichintribal.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gwich&#8217;in Tribal Council<\/a>. The creation of this massive document involved the passions and labour of many people, including the 23 Gwich\u2019in Elders who shared their stories for this book. We are grateful to Sharon Snowshoe and the Gwich\u2019in Tribal Council for letting us be a part of this amazing project. This book has its roots in a provocative and illuminating lecture delivered by the amazing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/arts\/sets\/people\/dionne-brand\">Dionne Brand<\/a> at the University of Alberta in April 2019, as part of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/clc-kreisel-lecture-series\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/clc-kreisel-lecture-series\" target=\"_blank\">Kriesel Lecture series<\/a> organized by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/canadian-literature-centre\/index.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/canadian-literature-centre\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Literature Centre | Centre de litt\u00e9rature canadienne<\/a>, which is also our co-publisher for this series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These awards honour the creators of the work we publish. I also want to recognize the whole UAlberta Press team: Mat Buntin, Michelle Lobkowicz, Cathie Crooks, Alan Brownoff, Duncan Turner, and Elisia Snyder, as well as interns Tanvi Mohile, Richard Costa, Keely Shirt, and Alex Ventimilla.
