We wanted to celebrate a number of achievements before blasting into another new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But first, we give a very sincere \u201cthank you\u201d to everyone who supports our work: from editors and indexers, printers and distributors, booksellers and readers, granting bodies and the University of Alberta. We have an amazing group of staff members and interns and our authors are absolute powerhouses of talent and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Award Fun<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ken Haigh was a finalist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.writerstrust.com\/awards\/hilary-weston-writers-trust-prize-for-nonfiction\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.writerstrust.com\/awards\/hilary-weston-writers-trust-prize-for-nonfiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hilary Weston Writers\u2019 Trust Prize for Nonfiction<\/a> for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1013-9781772125450-on-foot-to-canterbury\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1013-9781772125450-on-foot-to-canterbury\">On Foot to Canterbury: A Son\u2019s Pilgrimage<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ken gave three illustrated talks about&nbsp;the book during the fall: all virtual, of course. They were hosted by the Collingwood Public Library, Atwater Library, and Blue Mountains Public Library. While we would have loved to see Ken win this prize, it gave us many opportunities for promotion and raised Ken\u2019s profile as a writer. It was a thrilling ride!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations to Tomson Highway for winning the nonfiction prize for&nbsp;<em>Permanent Astonishment<\/em>. Some years ago, University of Alberta Press published Highway\u2019s Kreisel lecture,<em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/307-9781772120417-tale-of-monstrous-extravagance\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/307-9781772120417-tale-of-monstrous-extravagance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Tale of Monstrous Extravagance: Imagining Multilingualism<\/a><\/em>. He is a phenomenal writer and wonderful person to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/977-9781772124828-our-whole-gwichin-way-of-life-has-changed-gwichin-kyuu-gwiidandai-tthak-ejuk-goonlih\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/977-9781772124828-our-whole-gwichin-way-of-life-has-changed-gwichin-kyuu-gwiidandai-tthak-ejuk-goonlih\" target=\"_blank\">Our Whole Gwich\u2019in Way of Life Has Changed \/ Gwich\u2019in K\u2019yuu Gwiidand\u00e0i\u2019 Tthak Ejuk G\u00f2onlih<\/a><\/em>\u00a0won the Oral History Association Book Award, Scholarly and Academic Book of the Year at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bookpublishers.ab.ca\/programs\/awards\/#A5\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bookpublishers.ab.ca\/programs\/awards\/#A5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alberta Book Awards<\/a>, and was named a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/member-news\/2021\/11\/choice-announces-outstanding-academic-titles-2021\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/member-news\/2021\/11\/choice-announces-outstanding-academic-titles-2021\" target=\"_blank\">2021 Choice Outstanding Academic Title<\/a>. Congratulations to Leslie McCartney and Gwich&#8217;in Tribal Council for their remarkable work. We were particularly pleased to see Alan Brownoff win a design award for the book from the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/aupresses.org\/news\/2021-book-jacket-and-journal-show-selections\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/aupresses.org\/news\/2021-book-jacket-and-journal-show-selections\/\" target=\"_blank\">AUPresses Book, Jacket, &amp; Journal Show<\/a> in the Scholarly Typographic category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan also won an award in the same competition in the Poetry and Literature category, for <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/971-9781772125085-autobiography-of-the-autobiography-of-reading\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/971-9781772125085-autobiography-of-the-autobiography-of-reading\" target=\"_blank\">An Autobiography of the Autobiography of Reading<\/a><\/em> by Dionne Brand. The book also won Trade Non-Fiction Book of the Year at the <a href=\"https:\/\/bookpublishers.ab.ca\/programs\/awards\/#A5\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bookpublishers.ab.ca\/programs\/awards\/#A5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alberta Book Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kat Cameron took home the Poetry prize in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.highplainsbookawards.org\/2021-finalists\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.highplainsbookawards.org\/2021-finalists\/\" target=\"_blank\">High Plains Book Awards<\/a> for her collection, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/972-9781772125092-ghosts-still-linger\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/972-9781772125092-ghosts-still-linger\" target=\"_blank\">Ghosts Still Linger<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/914-9781772123746-flying-zoo\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/914-9781772123746-flying-zoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Flying Zoo: Birds, Parasites, and the World They Share<\/a><\/em> by Michael Stock won Best Wildlife Publication Award in the Popular Category for the Alberta Chapter of the Wildlife Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/angelineschellenberg.wordpress.com\/about\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/angelineschellenberg.wordpress.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Angeline Schellenberg<\/a> has been shortlisted for the prestigious <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kobzarbookaward.com\/kobzar-book-award-2022-shortlist-announced\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.kobzarbookaward.com\/kobzar-book-award-2022-shortlist-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kobzar Book Award<\/a> for her book of poetry, <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/974-9781772125115-fields-of-light-and-stone\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/974-9781772125115-fields-of-light-and-stone\" target=\"_blank\">Fields of Light and Stone<\/a><\/em>. First, Rona Altrows and contributors to&nbsp;<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/985-9781772125320-you-look-good-for-your-age\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/985-9781772125320-you-look-good-for-your-age\" target=\"_blank\">You Look Good for Your Age<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;gave readings and engaged in conversation. Rosemary Griebel was our superb moderator. Second, readings and conversations from several contributors to&nbsp;<em>Impact<\/em> under the title, \u201cEvery Concussion Experience is Different. Women Writers in Conversation.\u201d Angie Abdou was the perfect moderator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both anthologies had hugely successful launch events as well. Rona\u2019s launch had well over 100 viewers while E. D. Morin and Jane Cawthorne launched under the umbrella of Toronto Lit Up, with Jay Ingram as moderator and interviewer. Several contributors to <em>You Look Good for Your Age<\/em> recorded <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLCiHkBuv_jWasqjhChDbG3YUdyw2RkHRC\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLCiHkBuv_jWasqjhChDbG3YUdyw2RkHRC\" target=\"_blank\">individual readings<\/a>, while Jane Cawthorne worked with Ryerson film student Junyeong Kim and the contributors to create an amazing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLCiHkBuv_jWYTc064OeLoAf08FnOSm1bJ\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLCiHkBuv_jWYTc064OeLoAf08FnOSm1bJ\" target=\"_blank\">group of videos<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Henry and two of the co-authors of <em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1014-9781772125498-indigenous-women-and-street-gangs\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1014-9781772125498-indigenous-women-and-street-gangs\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Women and Street Gangs: Survivance Narratives<\/a><\/em> launched the book at McNally Robinson Saskatoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1016-9781772125795-overcoming-the-neutral-zone-trap\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1016-9781772125795-overcoming-the-neutral-zone-trap\" target=\"_blank\">Overcoming the Neutral Zone Trap: Hockey&#8217;s Agents of Change<\/a> <\/em>was launched at a powerful event featuring co-editors Cheryl MacDonald and Jon Edwards and several contributors, hosted by Brian Kennedy.
