Hello everyone, this post is to let you know of two database cancellations, effective December 31, 2019. We have cancelled two EBSCO databases, Chicano and AP Images.
Please refer to Elizabeth Wallace’s January 13 email to UALIB-L for details about resources that the CSU team is considering cancelling, and about which we are earnestly seeking your input. With Chicano and AP Images, the CSU librarians took the decision to cancel these databases due to their impending renewal at the end of December, so their cancellations are already in effect.
EBSCO describes Chicano as an index covering “a wide range of materials focused on the Mexican-American and Chicano experience, as well as the broader Latino experience of Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans and Central American immigrants from 1992 onward.” Figures relating to its cancellation include a $3,429.29 price tag for the most recent subscription year, which means a cost-per-use of $244.95/use, given that it has seen 14 uses/year.
Note that we still subscribe to ProQuest’s PRISMA database, which covers the same region, and additionally includes full text for 165 of the journals indexed there, whereas Chicano does not offer full text.
AP Images is primarily an image collection, featuring content from the Associated Press. Given the cancellations needed to meet the budget reduction, and our desire to retain the most valuable and relevant subscriptions, the more supplementary nature of AP Images makes it a candidate for cancellation.
We trust that these details serve to illuminate these decisions. Please be aware of the “Our Collection” area of the UAL site, which is where public updates on the budget reduction process will be posted in due course. See the “Collections Budget” page, specifically, for an initial statement of the principles guiding upcoming budget reduction decisions.
And as always, please be in touch via csu@ualberta.ca with questions or feedback. Thanks all.
