This image depicts myself and my friend and fellow Masters student Preston Tran, operating the fermenter’s at the University of Alberta’s Agri-Food Discovery Place (AFDP) on south campus. My research involves exploring the use of fermentation to produce a sustainable animal feed source known as single-cell protein. Having gained experience in operating smaller, bench scale bioreactors, the opportunity to operate larger reactors for industry clients occasionally arises for myself and fellow lab members of Dr. David Bressler’s lab. To me, this image represents a long friendship between Preston and myself that began early in our undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and our enduring teamwork as we grow our knowledge and passion in the field of sustainable bioproduction. The opportunity to aid in the production of various bioproducts at AFDP has served to provide me with confidence and curiosity surrounding the directions I hope to take my career. Onwards and upwards!
