Beneath the surface of clinical triumph, immune checkpoint inhibitors, powerful cancer immunotherapy, awaken a volcanic force—powerful, yet unpredictable. This eruption of bone and organ fragments in the lava flow, symbolizes the immune system turning against itself, triggering immune-related adverse events such as bone fractures, inflammatory arthritis, and pneumonia, all of which shatter the body’s equilibrium. A cure with a cost—a stunning display of efficacy shadowed by the chaos of collateral immune damage.

How was your image created?
The image was generated digitally using an AI-based image generation tool. I began by crafting a detailed text prompt describing the desired composition, style, and visual elements. The AI model created the figure based on my description. Some refinements were then made using an image cleanup website to remove certain elements and ensure that all components of the figure blended seamlessly.

How did you craft your prompt to guide the generative AI in creating your image? Please describe the technique or approach you used to convey your vision to the AI.
My goal was to create an image that visually conveys the clinical efficacy and toxicity of cancer immunotherapy, specifically immune checkpoint inhibitors. I chose AI to achieve a balance between creativity and precision, enabling me to explore visual concepts beyond the limits of traditional design. I crafted the prompt using detailed descriptions of the composition, key elements, and a color scheme inspired by the sea, reminiscent of the Santorini island landscape. To refine the result, I iteratively revised the prompt and adjusted object placement using an image cleanup tool. This iterative process allowed me to fine-tune both the aesthetic quality and the conceptual accuracy of the final image.

This digital conceptual image was created using an AI tool, ChatGPT,  and emerges from the research landscape of cancer immunotherapy. Developed in the context of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy—renowned for its ability to enhance the immune system to fight several malignancies—the image visualizes both the promise and peril of this medical breakthrough. The tranquil surface elements, such as the mountain, thriving plant life and sea, symbolize the visible therapeutic efficacy and stability ICIs can bring. Beneath, the eruptive volcanic force represents the hidden yet potent risks of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including bone fractures, inflammatory arthritis, and organ inflammation. Through these layered metaphors, the image captures the dual nature of ICIs—powerful agents of healing that can simultaneously destabilize the body’s immune equilibrium, provoking an internal tectonic shift.
