Augustana Library to be home to new (non-francophone) music recordings

Augustana Library will be the shelf location for new music recordings in future. (Francophone recordings will continue be located at BSJ, as usual.) This decision arises from discussions between CSU and CatMet, and it is informed by input from colleagues in different units and roles, over the past couple of years.

One option was to locate all new music recordings at RCRF. This option would entirely eliminate the opportunity to browse. At the same time, space demands at Rutherford make it unfeasible to carve out a new designated space for music recordings. Interfiling recordings in regular stacks is not ideal, either (because recordings vary greatly in size and are more fragile than books).

Enter Augustana, a campus with a highly-regarded music program and a lot of community music connections. Augustana Library has also retained its shelf locations for music. This makes it a good location for new recordings, where they can be encountered via browsing as well as via EDS/catalogue. People on the North Campus will be able to place holds for recordings, as normal.

As we all know, there have been lots of changes at Rutherford Library recently. One change was the move of the music recordings to the RCRF. With no designated music media location in Rutherford any longer, we were left with the question of where new recordings should be located. We don’t collect large quantities of CDs and LPs any more, but we do collect some, with a focus on local and Canadian music.
